Darren Collison makes sneaky Lakers appearance in big free-agency tip - New York Post

The NBA trade deadline came and went without a move from the Lakers, but that doesn’t mean roster changes aren’t in the works.

Free-agent point guard Darren Collison was spotted with Lakers owner Jeannie Buss in the second row at Staples Center Thursday night for the Lakers’ 121-111 loss to the Rockets. The two arrived at their seats with their hoodies pulled up over their heads, likely hoping to stay discreet, according to ESPN.

But that didn’t last long: Collison was broadcasted onto the jumbotron above center court, drawing a thunderous applause from the home crowd.

Collison, who cited religious reasons for his abrupt exit from the NBA in June after playing since 2009, would be a timely addition for the Lakers, who have been in need of a ball-handler with scoring ability behind LeBron James all season. The Clippers struck a three-team deal Thursday with the Knicks and Wizards to acquire Marcus Morris.

ESPN had reported last month that Collison, who played for UCLA in college, was deliberating whether or not to return to the league. If he does, the report said, he’d likely be interested in the Lakers or Clippers.

When asked if his appearance at the Lakers game meant there was a deal brewing, Collison didn’t offer up much.

“Just watching the game, ain’t nothing to it,” Collison, 32, told ESPN. “Got the best seats in the house.”

In 10 seasons, Collison averaged 12.5 points and five assists while shooting 39.4 percent from behind the arc. He also is familiar with current Lakers coach Frank Vogel, who coached Collison from 2010-12 in Indiana.

The Lakers, who are expected to be active on the buyout market as well, currently have a full 15-man roster and would need to waive someone in order to sign Collison.

The New York Times reported Thursday the Lakers would also give free-agent guard J.R. Smith a look with a post-trade deadline workout.
