Utah Jazz: Gobert, Mitchell not named starters for NBA All-Star Game - Deseret News

Should either or both of the Utah Jazz’s franchise pillars make their first NBA All-Star Game appearance next month, it will be as a reserve.

The 10 starters for the two teams were announced on Thursday evening, and neither Rudy Gobert nor Donovan Mitchell were selected from the Western Conference.

Such didn’t come as much of a surprise, as neither finished high in the fan vote, which accounted for 50% of the selection process, and they didn’t make up ground in the player and media vote, which accounted for the other 50%.

Gobert finished 11th among West frontcourt players in the fan vote, ninth in the player vote and fifth in the media vote for ninth overall. Mitchell finished seventh among West backcourt players in the fan vote, sixth in the player vote and fourth in the media vote for fifth overall.

Gobert was widely seen as having a better chance of being named a starter than Mitchell, but the three frontcourt spots all went to players in Los Angeles. LeBron James and Anthony Davis will represent the Lakers and Kawhi Leonard the Clippers.

In the backcourt, most expected Dallas Mavericks do-everything youngster Luka Doncic and Houston Rockets guard James Harden to be named, and that indeed was the case.

Giannis Antetokounmpo, Pascal Siakam, Joel Embiid, Kemba Walker and Trae Young were named the Eastern Conference starters.

The remaining seven reserves for each team will be announced on Jan. 30. Although starters were named by conference, James and Antetokounmpo were named captains and will have a draft on Feb. 6 where they will select their teams.

The All-Star Game will be played on Feb. 16 in Chicago.
