NFL commissioner Roger Goodell didn’t offer an update into the ongoing investigation concerning free agent wide receiver Antonio Brown, but he did share the NFL’s official stance. He wants Brown to get any help he may need.
"In Antonio’s situation, I think the first thing for all of us is to think about the well-being of Antonio,” Goodell said Wednesday in Miami Beach at the NFL’s annual state of the league news conference. “To understand what Antonio's going through. We don't talk about the wellness of our players publicly, but I would tell you that you can be assured that the NFL and the NFLPA have a tremendous amount of resources that are available to all players. They are going to be made available to Antonio.”
Brown, 31, was arrested and charged with burglary with battery, burglary of an unoccupied conveyance and criminal mischief, stemming from an alleged assault of a moving-truck driver who was parked outside of Brown’s home in Hollywood, Florida. On Tuesday, a judge freed Brown from an ankle monitor and house arrest.
In an interview with USA TODAY Sports, Brown said he put himself “in a bad predicament” but added that he was “out of it now.” Brown has reiterated that he intends to return to the NFL.
“We want to help get him on the right track and get him in a position where he is in the zone where he thinks he can be successful in life,” Goodell continued. “We are confident that can happen. We want to work to do that and for our standpoint, that's the first step. And the first step is making sure we're doing everything to help Antonio.”
Brown has been out of the NFL since the Patriots released him Sept. 20 after he appeared in a Week 2 game for New England, the only game Brown appeared in this season.
The Patriots released Brown after Sports Illustrated uncovered multiple allegations of sexual assault. The outlet also reported that Brown allegedly harassed one of the victims through direct messages in one of his social media accounts, which prompted New England to release him.
That marked the second time a team had released Brown this year, after the Raiders did so Sept. 7 following an offseason full of turmoil. The Raiders had traded with the Pittsburgh Steelers for Brown and signed him to a three-year, $50 million contract. But he suffered an injury to his feet after a cryotherapy mishap and then later skipped team practices and meetings.
