Matt Rhule responds to Giants rumblings: 'Don’t believe the hype' - New York Post

Baylor head coach Matt Rhule has emerged as a top candidate to fill the Giants coaching vacancy, but he isn’t fanning the flames.

In his first public comments since the Giants fired Pat Shurmur on Monday morning, Rhule told AM1660 ESPN-Central Texas radio that there is “nothing pending” regarding his coaching future.

“I’m getting on a plane the day after the [Sugar Bowl on Wednesday] and I’m flying to Mexico with my wife and kids,” Rhule told the radio station. “It’s not like I’m going back to Waco and meeting with people. If I wanted to go do something else – I’m going to be on the beach, or at a pool, in Cabo with my wife and kids. Just don’t believe the hype, man.”

Of course those plans could change if a team like the Giants come calling in the meantime.

The 44-year-old New York native has had his eyes on the Giants’ job for years, according to The Post’s Ryan Dunleavy, and was the Giants’ assistant offensive line coach in 2012.

And this isn’t the first time Rhule has garnered NFL interest, as he interviewed for the Jets head coaching vacancy last offseason.

In addition to Rhule, the Giants could look to Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy, Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels and Cowboys passing game coordinator/defensive backs coach Kris Richard to fill their vacancy.

Richard, according to ESPN, is scheduled to interview with the Giants on Thursday.
