49ers 28, Cardinals 25: Grades - 49ers.pressdemocrat.com

SANTA CLARA — The 49ers beat the Arizona Cardinals 28-25 Thursday night. Here are the 49ers’ grades:

GAROPPOLO: A. He has two sides — Good Jimmy and Bad Jimmy. Against the Cardinals, he wasn’t merely Good Jimmy. He was Super Jimmy. He played the best game of his career. Threw for 317 yards and four touchdowns and zero interceptions. Bad Jimmy never made an appearance. Super Jimmy played the whole game, and performed particularly well on third down, when he completed nine of 12 pass attempts. And we’re not talking easy passes. Super Jimmy frequently made subtle moves in the pocket under pressure and converted third-and-longs. All four of his touchdown throws came on third down or fourth down. Clutch. We hadn’t seen him carry the 49ers to victory yet this season, and we wondered if he could. The answer is clear: Hell yes, he can.

RUNNING BACKS: B. Matt Breida was excellent — he ran 15 times for 78 yards (5.2 yards per carry) even though he had an injured ankle. He’s so tough and fast, and he runs surprisingly hard between the tackles for a small running back. He is one of the best running backs in the league. Tevin Coleman didn’t play particularly well — he averaged 1.9 yards per carry. But, he had no room to run most of the game.

WIDE RECEIVERS: A-minus. The 49ers may not have won without Emmanuel Sanders. He roasted the Cardinals’ No. 1 cornerback — Patrick Peterson. Made him look old, slow and just plain bad. Sanders finished with seven catches for 112 yards and one touchdown. He is the best wide receiver the 49ers have had since Anquan Boldin. The rest of the wide receivers played well, too. Kendrick Bourne caught a seven-yard touchdown pass, and Dante Pettis caught a 21-yard touchdown pass. Rookie Deebo Samuel dropped two passes, but redeemed himself by making clutch catches during the second half.

TIGHT ENDS: A. George Kittle appeared to hyper-extend his left knee on the 49ers’ first offensive play from scrimmage, but he stayed in the game and caught six passes for 79 yards and a touchdown. He is one of the toughest and best players in the NFL. And his backup is good, too. Ross Dwelley made four catches, including an 11-yard catch on third-and-nine to put away the Cardinals. The 49ers have an elite tight-end tandem.

OFFENSIVE LINE: B. They didn’t create much running room — the 49ers averaged just 3.3 yards per carry as an offense. But, the offensive line gave up just one sack, and repeatedly gave Garoppolo just enough time to make long passes on third down. And the starting offensive tackles still aren’t healthy. This unit will get much better when Joe Staley and Mike McGlinchey return.

DEFENSIVE LINE: B. The Cardinals ran for 153 yards and averaged 6.7 yards per carry — they took advantage of the wide gaps between the defensive linemen in 49ers’ “Wide 9” defense. But, the D-line successfully caged Kyler Murray in the pocket and did not let him scramble for big gains — he ran five times for just 34 yards. And DeForest Buckner and Dee Ford each sacked Murray once. The defensive line did what it needed to do.

LINEBACKERS: D. Fred Warner recorded nine tackles, but dropped a pick-six and frequently found himself out of position. Kwon Alexander injured his pectoral muscle and did not finish the game. He will have an MRI to see if he tore his pectoral muscle. Neither he nor Warner could stop Cardinals running back Kenyan Drake, who led Arizona with 162 yards from scrimmage.

DEFENSIVE BACKS: C. Murray’s quarterback rating was 130.7, and he completed 17 of 24 passes for 241 yards and two touchdowns. His favorite target was Drake, his running back. But, he also completed an 88-yard touchdown pass to rookie wide receiver Andy Isabella in the fourth quarter. During that play, cornerback Emmanuel Moseley got beat, and cornerback Richard Sherman missed a tackle. The 49ers’ secondary seems ordinary when the pass rush isn’t dominant.

SPECIAL TEAMS: A. Rookie Mitch Wishnowsky landed three punts inside the Cardinals’ 10-yard line, and Richie James Jr. averaged a solid 8.3 yards per punt return.

COACHES: B. Defensive coordinator fulfilled his No. 1 task — stop Murray from running. He kept Murray in the pocket, made him play quarterback and made the Cardinals drive methodically. And the defense would have given up just 17 points had Sherman not missed a tackle near midfield during Isabella’s 88-yard touchdown run. Saleh isn’t responsible for Sherman’s missed tackle. Saleh coached well. Kyle Shanahan coached even better. With the game on the line, he called a pass for backup tight end Ross Dwelley, an extremely brave and daring call. Dwelley had just three catches coming into the game. Shanahan gets better every week.

Figuring out the unrecognizable Phoenix Suns through 5 games - Arizona Sports

PHOENIX, ARIZONA - OCTOBER 28: (L-R) Cameron Johnson #23, Jevon Carter #4, Frank Kaminsky #8, Kelly Oubre Jr. #3, Mikal Bridges #25 and Elie Okobo #2 of the Phoenix Suns are introduced before the NBA game against the Utah Jazz at Talking Stick Resort Arena on October 28, 2019 in Phoenix, Arizona. The Jazz defeated the Suns 96-95.(Photo by Christian Petersen/Getty Images)

When Monty Williams was asked in the preseason when he would really know what he had in this Phoenix Suns team, he said it would be whenever they got punched in the mouth.

Five games in and that just hasn’t happened yet.

The Suns are 3-2, the biggest surprise in a very young NBA season, and those two losses were by a point apiece to two great teams — the Denver Nuggets and the Utah Jazz. In their three wins, they dismantled the Sacramento Kings and Golden State Warriors while controlling most of a home win against the Los Angeles Clippers.

With the combination of such a short sample size and a rapid transformation, it’s difficult to assess what exactly we have here. And we haven’t got to the points where Williams will know, either.

Let’s try and figure that out, starting with what appears to be legit.

Defensive structure and intensity

The Suns could be going through what they did at times last year, a spurt of great defense that will eventually flatten out or die altogether after a week or two.

But what we’ve seen in terms of principles and structure suggest this defense is here to stay.

Maybe not to this extent, as the Suns are fourth in points allowed per 100 possessions (98.4), first in effective field goal percentage allowed (46.1%) and fourth in points off turnovers (21.4). That’s a strong, strong level of execution, and while it won’t hold at this level, the Suns will still be competent in those areas. They are simply too active not to be.

Check out how easy of a steal this is against the Warriors. Both Dario Saric and Aron Baynes track the roll of the ball screen inside while Rubio gets by a lazy screen, and Saric is there to cut off Russell’s angle to the corner as well.

Similar play here. Both Saric and Kelly Oubre Jr. are there to suffocate the roll after Stephen Curry is taken out of the play by Rubio and Baynes.

To the execution point, notice how quickly Devin Booker, Saric and Oubre fill lanes in transition to give Rubio options. That’s a free bucket for Oubre because Booker sprinted out to get on the left wing first, dragging Draymond Green with him.

Against Utah, Rubio in this example tags the free throw line as Baynes cuts off Donovan Mitchell’s drive. Mikal Bridges works to get back when Rubio has to leave, and in case Ed Davis gets a lane, Tyler Johnson is there at the rim.

Whether it’s a turnover or not, everyone seems to be on the same page and fills out the basic responsibilities of team defense. That goes a long, long way.

Phoenix opposition averages 20.2 assists per game, the sixth-lowest across the league. That’s because of the team’s work in the halfcourt in the first half of the shot clock.

The Suns give up 98.4 points per possessions in the halfcourt, the fourth-best mark. For the context on how low that is, Phoenix averaged 115.2 points per 100 possessions allowed in the halfcourt last year. Yeah, a pretty stark difference.

They are also chasing teams off the line. The Suns allow 29.2 three-pointers, the fifth-least in the NBA.

Furthermore, all the hustle is backed up statistically. They are 13th in deflections per game (15.6), fourth in points allowed off putbacks (11.7) and tied for fifth in loose balls recovered (9.0).

It’s sustainable, whether it’s a top 20 defense in the league after a bit of a dropoff or top-five like it currently is. That might sound like a drastic dip but a “passable” defense would make so much of a difference.

Ball movement

The Suns have a lot of players who aren’t necessarily playmakers and “plus passers” but they all want to move the ball and play within the “point-five” quick decision-making system.

They are first in the percentage of their baskets assisted (70.9%) and tied for sixth in assist-to-turnover ratio (1.78).

A good example late in the shot clock below.

Jevon Carter takes a second to potentially shoot, goes down low to Frank Kaminsky, who takes two dribbles and draws the defense over. Bridges could shoot but makes the extra pass to the best shooter in the building, Cam Johnson.

Carter and Kaminsky could have isolated or Bridges could have shot. Instead, the ball moves and it finds the best possible scenario.

This is replicable.

Don’t believe me? Here we are only a few minutes later into that game.

When it doesn’t flow as naturally, dudes are moving.

The Suns average six field goals per game off cuts, tied for second leaguewide.

On this play, Bridges goes from flashing the right wing, to the corner, to seeing an opening to the baseline and taking it.

Bridges is 30 feet from the basket here. A run inside and dime from Tyler Johnson later and he’s got another bucket.

The ever-wise Eddie Johnson says “beautiful play” before Bridges even touches the ball. The winning plays are so easy to spot and the Suns are making them.

Oubre could stand in the corner after he has finished his role in this action. He doesn’t.

Again, who knows if this stays at an elite level like it is at the moment. Probably not. There’s at least concepts and a style of play to build off here, though, and one that’s going to get them a handful of free buckets each night.

Who knows if the above leads to 30ish wins, a decent feat without Deandre Ayton for 25 games, or somewhere closer to 40.

Rightfully so, the story for the Suns should be the positive team traits on both ends rather than what’s a little wonkier.

Here’s what 15 more games or so will give us a far better idea about, both good and bad.

The bad man settling in

Booker has been mediocre to his standards offensively, and this is where we should mention he’s playing the best defense of his career, by far.

He’s shooting 47.4% from the field on 24.4 points, 4.0 rebounds and 6.0 assists per game. Somehow, it feels like those should go up.

The most obvious place is the touch on his jumper in the mid-range area. On the 5.8 pull-up jumpers from inside the three-point line he’s taking a game this year, Booker is shooting 31.1%. Last year that number was 46.9%.

He’s making up for this by shooting a ridiculous 64.7% from inside 10 feet. He was at 58.8% for 2018-19, and that was a high-level output.

They just aren’t falling yet.

We’ve all watched Booker enough by now to know where he thrives more than others as perimeter scorers. It’s around the free-throw circle.

Discovering the rhythm between taking these shots and whizzing the ball around is what he’s currently plodding through.

Too many times we’ve seen him turn down a decent look to pass.

He needs to pull this or attack off the dribble in a Denver game he was desperate to get back in the flow of.

Booker will get there. Williams has done a great job tweaking the offense in the past two games to get him better halfcourt looks after a concerning start to the year.

The Suns often go as he goes, and that’s still the case offensively despite some in-game stretches where the team did well while Booker rested.

Phoenix’s offensive rating drops from 113.6 to 91.8 when Booker sits. Last year, it was around a 10-point drop, and expect that to still be the case with this group even with the depth.

Keep an eye on the runs when he’s off the court the next couple of games. Unfortunately, they’re coming.

Booker has another two levels to increase his game from last year. The defense is already one of ’em. The offense will bring another, and this current tick isn’t it. Be optimistic about a streaking November from him.

How deep is this team really?

A lot more cut and dry here.

Baynes, Carter, Kaminsky and Oubre are playing the best basketball of their lives. With that, they go a few levels higher in how they are perceived as contributors.

Baynes is a starting-caliber center at the moment. Carter is a top-tier backup point guard. Kaminsky is a Sixth Man of the Year candidate. Oubre looks like he can be the third cog behind the two pillars.

Booker, the Johnsons, Rubio and Saric have been varying degrees of what they are supposed to bring, with the rookie Cam specifically looking rotation ready like suspected after training camp and the preseason.

That’s a full, legitimate starting five and four trustworthy bench pieces. Nine deep, without even getting to Bridges, who has been the most concerning through five games, and the suspended Ayton.

Even better, all nine can shoot from deep and are doing so better than expected. Only Rubio and Kaminsky are shooting below the league average of around 35%. Cam Johnson and Booker are really the only two guys you’d expect to possibly float above that range and Baynes and Carter join them north of 40%.

Yes, all this means the Suns are a playoff team if this continues. It very, very likely will not. It’s a wait-and-see on where the consistency develops and where it does not.

Quality of play from the opposition

There’s an undeniable pushback to arrive at when projecting the Suns high enough on a potential win total.

All five teams they’ve faced have, quite simply, not played well against them. To start out of the gate here, a lot of that has to do with the way the Suns are 1) competing and 2) catching teams off-guard by doing so. They straight up mauled the Warriors. Golden State was not ready, even after four games of evidence to suggest they need to be.

The film and numbers will start to percolate with what works and what doesn’t against the Suns, something teams didn’t even have to consider in years past.

Go back above and watch all three of those defensive clips again. You’ll notice in all three that there’s at least one shooter open, albeit two of those on purpose probably to leave Green. It’s an aggressive brand of defense that leaves them susceptible.

The Suns are contesting 54.6 shots a game, tied for 28th in the NBA.

And on the 12.4 three-pointers per game Suns opponents take with as least six feet of space, meaning they are wide open, teams are shooting 29.0%, the third-lowest percentage in the league.

That’s where regression will kick in, and now teams are ready for a scrappy, intelligent opponent instead of a layup. Who can say how much variance that adds in the next month or so of basketball?

World Series: Gerrit Cole not pitching Game 7 was inexcusable, and A.J. Hinch's decision will haunt the Astros - CBS Sports

David Samson leads the post-World Series edition of the 'Nothing Personal with David Samson' podcast with the word of the day which today is "Unfortunate" which he uses to describe Andy Dalton's current situation but also applies to the Houston Astros who lost Game 7 of the World Series on Wednesday 6-2 to the Washington Nationals

Samson questioned the Astros' pitching choices at the end of the game. "If you're going to go to the bullpen how can you not go for Gerrit Cole," but that's not what Houston did, and advanced analytics may have played a part in that decision.

With analytics, "You can't rely solely on it," Samson goes on to explain and says doing so may have cost the Astros the world series. "In a Game 7 I'm gonna use my eyes more," he said.

Hinch came out of the dugout to take starter Zack Greinke out of the game in the seventh inning, Samson was saying to himself, "He's got to be getting Cole, he's gotta be getting Cole," but the Astros did not bring in Cole.

"Cole was not put in the game, and that is inexcusable for me. But what is more inexcusable is why Cole was not put in the game."

Hinch will have you believe the plan was only to pitch Cole in the ninth inning if they had the lead, but that leaves Samson with a few questions.

"You're not going to the best pitcher possibly in the entire game, certainly in the American League and certainly in the postseason? Because you're not losing?"

Samson thinks they gave up the chance for a ring with that decision. He says Houston may not get another chance at a title with this core group and that will weigh on the clubhouse for as long as this iteration of the Astros is together.

He believes their story would have been different if there was a lead and Cole was never actually going to pitch in the game. Samson adds that he believes Houston wanted Cole in the best health possible heading into free agency.

And speaking of free agency, Cole was seen after the game during his press conference in a hat with the logo of his agent Scott Boras and posted messages on social media that had the underlying feeling that this guy was definitely leaving. It is looking like Cole attended, because you can't say pitched, in his last game with the Astros in their Game 7 loss..

"Be back soon!" he added at the bottom of the post.

Curry went down in the third quarter and broke his hand when Aron Baynes of the Phoenix Suns landed on top of him.

He's scheduled to have an MRI and CT scan Thursday to determine how bad the injury is and when he could possibly return to the game.

Warriors lose Stephen Curry to broken hand, look for answers - SFGate

Updated

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — In a matter of months, the once-unbeatable Warriors have gone from a starting lineup featuring five All-Stars to a cast of youngsters almost nobody knows.

At least to start the season they had staples Stephen Curry, Draymond Green and Kevon Looney to lean on for leadership.

Now, Curry and Looney are hurt and Green is dealing with a balky back. And the Warriors have looked anything but dominant during a 1-3 start.

"It's been a tough start for us on many levels, so we're just trying to find our footing," coach Steve Kerr said. "This puts us in a tough spot, so we'll assess it and go from there."

Stephen Curry holds up his bandaged hand in a recent Instagram story, after hurting it on the court Wednesday during a game against the Phoenix Suns.

Curry joined Splash Brother Klay Thompson as the latest sidelined star. The two-time MVP broke his left hand in a 121-110 loss to Phoenix on Wednesday night and it remained unclear a day later how long he might be sidelined, while Splash Brother Thompson could miss the entire season recovering from July 2 surgery for a torn ACL in his left knee that he hurt in a Game 6 loss in the NBA Finals that gave Toronto its first title. Curry underwent a CT scan Thursday but the team said it would have specialists evaluate the results before providing an update on his status.

However long he is out, it hurts for far more than what he brings on the court. Curry's presence in the locker room provides an example for the young Warriors, and he is their longest-tenured player and their oldest at age 31. It will be up to players like Russell and Green to help keep things afloat for the time being.

Many already consider it a lost season, with playoff hopes in the powerful Western Conference grim at best. Golden State might instead be lining itself up for a lottery pick in next year's NBA draft.

Still, Curry posted a smiling photo of himself, with the hand heavily wrapped, Thursday on his Instagram account with the message: "Appreciate all the love/texts/support all that ... Be back soon!"

The two-time MVP drove to his left defended by Kelly Oubre Jr. and, with Aron Baynes standing solidly in the paint, trying to draw a charge. Curry leapt with the ball then came down head first landing awkwardly on his hands to brace himself from the court, with Baynes crashing onto Curry's left hand. Curry grimaced in pain grabbing his hand then walked to the locker room with 8:31 left in the third quarter.

D'Angelo Russell has done this before, forced to take on a far bigger role just last season because of injuries in Brooklyn. And now the new Golden State guard must do it again with a suddenly short-handed backcourt. Russell understands he faces a tall task.

"Definitely trying to take on that leadership role and continue to get better every year with being able to lead guys on what I see and what I've been through," he said. "It's definitely a similar situation, but it's going to be tougher. We've got a lot of young guys that are going to be forced to mature and step up, so I'm looking forward to it as well. ... It's an opportunity. Go back to the drawing board with the team and the coaching staff, and see what we can do to prepare for each game day in and day out. The big thing I see is just opportunity for a lot of people."

In fact, Kerr planned to gather his staff Thursday — the player development coaches have already been working on overload — for a serious meeting of the minds to figure out how to push ahead and what combinations might work going forward with so many men down. Golden State already was missing key big man Looney, who is dealing with a hamstring injury and scheduled to see specialists next week because of an "on-going presence of a neuropathic condition in his body."

The challenge of putting a winning team on the court now seems daunting. The rookies have been thrown into action right away out of necessity — not the norm with these Warriors in recent years.

"We just got to make up for it by playing hard and playing together, and making sure we're together the time he's out," said rookie Eric Paschall, who made his first career start and scored a team-high 20 points against the Suns.

The losses have been ugly — Phoenix led 43-14 after the first quarter — at home in new Chase Center, where the Warriors are winless and hardly have that imposing home-court advantage that Oracle Arena provided night after night across the bay in Oakland.

Two players returned from injuries Wednesday to make their debuts with Golden State: center Willie Cauley-Stein and guard Alec Burks.

General manager Bob Myers mentioned months ago this would be a rebuilding season for the Warriors in many ways.

The Warriors' recent fortunes also shed light on just how much must go right to win a championship, let alone reach five straight NBA Finals and capture three titles in four years.

There are nine players age 23 or younger.

"I don't know how long it'll take. It'll take as long as it takes, I guess," Myers said at media day. "... I do know this: We believe that things take time to evolve, and we're prepared especially with a younger roster to allow that to happen, and that's the mindset that we have from a coaching staff, from a front office staff, is 'let's see how things are going before we make any blanket decisions or judgment on any of it.' But we're excited. I mean, look, we're excited about the youth. We're excited about the unknown. In years past we've had a lot of known, which has been fantastic, but this is different."

Notes: The Warriors on Thursday announced they have exercised the third-year contract options for the 2020-21 season on guard Jacob Evans III and forward Omari Spellman.

Charles Barkley Calls Joel Embiid, Karl-Anthony Towns Fight 'A Snuggle Party' - Bleacher Report

PHILADELPHIA, PA - OCTOBER 30: Joel Embiid #21 of the Philadelphia 76ers fights with Karl-Anthony Towns #32 of the Minnesota Timberwolves in the third quarter at the Wells Fargo Center on October 30, 2019 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Some might say Karl-Anthony Towns and Joel Embiid had a fight Wednesday night. Others might call it a skirmish or altercation. Charles Barkley had a different way to describe the situation.

Barkley said Towns and Embiid had a "snuggle party":

During the third quarter of the Philadelphia 76ers' 117-95 win over the Minnesota Timberwolves, a shoving match between Towns and Embiid started. Things escalated from there:

The two turned to social media to continue exchanging barbs after the game (warning: tweets contain profanity):

The NBA announced Thursday that Towns and Embiid each received two-game suspensions. Ben Simmons, who at one point had his right arm around Towns' neck, wasn't punished for his role in the fracas.

Matt Nagy wants Bears to learn from Nationals - nbcsports.com

The Washington Nationals won the World Series by defeating the Houston Astros in Game Seven on Wednesday night and there weren’t many people predicting that’s how the baseball season would wind up early in the season.

Washington was 19-31 after their first 50 games, but went 74-38 the rest of the way to earn a playoff spot and then went through three National League teams to make it to the World Series. Bears head coach Matt Nagy hopes the turnaround tale is one his team will take to heart.

Nagy said he showed his 3-4 team a presentation about the Nationals on Thursday that focused on not letting a slow start ensure a bad finish to a season.

“How do you not show that to your guys and let them pull from that?” Nagy said, via J.J. Stankevitz of NBCSportsChicago.com.

The Bears have nine games left to show that they are better than they’ve been over the first seven games. The first comes in Philadelphia this Sunday and another loss will make it harder to see their season having the same happy ending that the Nationals got this week.

49ers vs. Cardinals odds, line: Thursday Night Football picks, optimal predictions from model on 87-60 run - CBS Sports

The unbeaten San Francisco 49ers put their 7-0 record on the line on Thursday Night Football when they visit the 3-4 Arizona Cardinals at 8:20 p.m. ET at State Farm Stadium. The Niners are one of the most surprising teams in football and rolled over Carolina, 51-13, last week. San Francisco quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo has passed for 1,489 yards and nine touchdowns, hitting nine different receivers for those scores. The Cardinals saw a three-game winning streak snapped last week by the Saints, who welcomed quarterback Drew Brees back in a 31-9 victory. The 49ers are 5-2 against the spread this season, but are trying to break an eight-game losing streak to the Cardinals, while Arizona is 5-3 against the number. San Francisco is a 10-point favorite in the latest 49ers vs. Cardinals odds after the line opened at eight. The over-under, or total number of points Vegas thinks will be scored, is 43. Before you make any Cardinals vs. 49ers picks of your own, you need to see what the SportsLine Projection Model has to say.

The model, which simulates every NFL game 10,000 times, is up almost $7,000 for $100 players on its top-rated NFL picks since its inception four years ago. It has nailed its recent top-rated NFL picks, entering Week 9 of the 2019 NFL schedule on a strong 25-17 run that dates back to last season.

It's also on an incredible 87-60 roll on top-rated NFL picks that dates back to the 2017 season, The model also ranked in the Top 10 on NFLPickWatch for the third year in a row on straight-up NFL picks and beat more than 96 percent of CBS Sports office pool players. Anyone who has followed it is way up.

Now, it has broken down Cardinals vs. Niners from every angle. We can tell you it's leaning over, but it also says one side of the spread cashes in more than 50 percent of simulations. You can only see that pick at SportsLine.

The model knows that the 49ers are aiming to get to 8-0 behind one of the top defenses in football. San Francisco allows just 11 points per game (only New England's 7.6 is lower) and allows an NFL-best 254.6 yards per game. And with seven sacks, Niners defensive end Nick Bosa is a strong candidate for Rookie of the Year as well as a long shot pick for Defensive Player of the Year.

The league's second-best rushing attack, San Francisco is led offensively by running back Matt Breida's 446 rushing yards on 84 carries and one touchdown, with backfield mate Tevin Coleman adding 332 rushing yards on 71 yards and five touchdowns.

But just because San Francisco dominates on both sides of the ball doesn't mean it will cover the 49ers vs. Cardinals spread on Thursday Night Football.

With a first-year coach in Kliff Kingsbury and a rookie quarterback in Kyler Murray, the Cardinals have had growing pains on offense. But Murray, who has completed 63.7 percent of his passes for 1,988 yards, has a veteran target in wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald, who has 38 catches for 448 yards and two touchdowns. Second-year receiver Christian Kirk had eight receptions for 79 yards last week and has 32 for 321 this season despite missing three games.

The Cardinals are allowing 27.9 points per game, but they are plus-three in turnover margin and have 22 sacks. The linebackers are the strength of the unit, with Chandler Jones third in the league with 8.5 sacks, Jordan Hicks second with 79 tackles and Haason Reddick posting 57 tackles, a sack and a fumble recovery. Safety Budda Baker is second on the team with 63 tackles, and Byron Murphy has five passes defended playing opposite shutdown corner Patrick Peterson.

So who wins Niners vs. Cardinals? And which side of the spread can you bank on in over 50 percent of simulations? Visit SportsLine right now to find out which side of the 49ers vs. Cardinals spread you should be all over on Thursday Night Football, all from the model that has returned over $7,000 on its top-rated NFL picks.

Warriors' Stephen Curry's Hand Injury Diagnosed as Fracture - Bleacher Report

OAKLAND, CA - APRIL 7: Stephen Curry #30 of the Golden State Warriors smiles during the game against the LA Clippers on April 7, 2019 at ORACLE Arena in Oakland, California. The Golden State Warriors announced Stephen Curry suffered a broken left hand during Wednesday's game against the Phoenix Suns.

Marcus Thompson of The Athletic first reported the news.

Ramona Shelburne of ESPN reported Curry would get an MRI to confirm the injury and timeline on Thursday but noted the initial diagnosis is a broken second metacarpal.

Curry, 31, had another brilliant season for the Warriors in 2018-19, averaging 27.3 points and 5.2 assists in 69 games. He shot 47.2 percent from the field and 43.7 percent from deep, and his total of 354 made three-pointers is the third-most in a single season in NBA history, trailing only the mark he set in 2015-16 (402) and James Harden this season (378).

He remains one of the NBA's most dominant offensive players, and this is a major blow.

Of course, the Warriors remain a talented team, with Draymond Green and D'Angelo Russell available to pick up the slack while Curry and Klay Thompson are sidelined.

But injuries remain an issue for Curry at this stage in his career. He missed a handful of games to a number of knocks last season, including spraining his right ankle on several occasions and suffering a sprained left MCL late in the year. There's little doubt that the wear and tear of a long NBA season—combined with five straight appearances in the NBA Finals—are taking their toll.

While Curry is out of action, Russell will likely assume point guard duties.

Stephen Curry exits Suns-Warriors with broken hand - NBA India

An already nightmarish evening took an even worse turn for the Warriors on Wednesday night.

After trailing the Phoenix Suns at home by more than 30 before halftime, Golden State saw Stephen Curry exit the game with an apparent left wrist injury. The two-time Kia MVP came up grimacing after being sandwiched between two Suns defenders on a drive to the rim. The team later confirmed Curry had suffered a broken hand.

Curry did not attempt his two free throws, and instead went immediately to the locker room for further evaluation. The Warriors guard finished the game with nine points, six assists and five rebounds in 21 minutes of action.

Curry had started the game hot, scoring seven points in the first three minutes. Then Phoenix ripped off an incredible 30-1 run, further emphasizing the defensive struggles with which Golden State has started the season.

Now the Warriors potentially face an even crueler road than when the season began. With Kevin Durant now in Brooklyn and Klay Thompson recovering from a torn ACL, Golden State had already lost half its usual All-Star cast. The burden fell on Curry and Draymond Green to lead a team of newcomers, rookies and former G League standouts through a brutal Western Conference.

If Curry does indeed miss extended time, that burden now shifts to Green and D'Angelo Russell to carry a franchise that seemed all but unbeatable until this year's rash of injuries. As of early Thursday morning, Warriors GM Bob Meyers was uncertain as to Curry's recovery time, per Kerith Burke of NBC Sports Bay Area.

Watch the play Warriors' Stephen Curry suffers broke his left hand on vs. the Suns - SF Gate

Warriors star Stephen Curry broke his left hand in the third quarter against the Phoenix Suns on Wednesday night at the Chase Center, the Warriors confirmed.

Curry was driving to the basket when he ran into the Suns' Aron Baynes, landing hard on his left land, which Baynes then landed on top of.

Afterward, Curry was seen holding his left wrist area.

According to NBC Sports' Kerith Burke, who spoke with Warriors GM Bob Myers following the injury, "Steph Curry will have a CT scan to determine if surgery is next the next step. A cast on Steph's broken left hand could be an option too. Estimated time of recovery unknown right now."

The Warriors were trailing the Suns 83-54 when Curry left the game and headed to the locker room. Curry finished his night with 9 points, 6 assists and 5 rebounds in 21 minutes of action.

Here's the play where Steph broke his hand:

The Dubs are already without All-Star guard Klay Thompson, who suffered a torn ACL during the NBA Finals last season, leaving them down two Splash Brothers in the midst of an already challenging first season at Chase Center. Golden State has trailed by 30 or more in three of their four games.

Steph leaves Warriors vs. Suns with apparent injury - NBCSports.com

SAN FRANCISCO -- For the last five years, the Warriors have had the biggest presence in the NBA.

So far this season, they've lacked presence because they're most important pieces have been absent.

Through four games, the Warriors have missed multiple players at various points. Klay Thompson is out indefinitely as he rehabs from a torn ACL, but expected contributors Willie Cauley-Stein, Kevon Looney and Alec Burks have also missed time. Even as Cauley Stein and Burks returned Wednesday, Golden State announced Looney (hamstring) would miss the entirety of the three-game homestand beginning Wednesday night against the Phoenix Suns, and guard Jacob Evans (abductor strain) would be out at least three weeks.

The Warriors -- longtime kings of the league -- are getting a dose of the real NBA.

Golden State's injury bug came to light on the eve of training camp, when general manager Bob Myers announced Cauley-Stein sprained his mid-foot in a summer pickup game. Over the next three days, Looney, Burks and rookie big man Alec Smailigic went down with injuries, crippling the Warriors' depth.

The timing might be worse than the injuries themselves. In the last six months, the Warriors have lost Kevin Durant in free agency and Thompson to the torn ACL, making way for eight new additions to the roster. A sign-and-trade for talented guard D'Angelo Russell put Golden State in salary-cap hell. Now, with little practice, Burks and Cauley-Stein are entering an unfamiliar environment.

"We have to see where they fit," Warriors coach Steve Kerr said prior to Wednesday night's game. "And it's tough because they've never -- forget playing in a game for us -- they haven't even scrimmaged. We barely know these players, and they don't know their teammates very well."

"It's hard not being able to practice and not really feel like the gel," Cauley-Stein said earlier Wednesday afternoon. "This will be the first time I'll practice with these dudes in a game setting, so it's going to be a lot of learning on the fly.

Burks and Cauley-Stein debuted Wednesday under dire circumstances. Entering Wednesday, the Warriors had been outscored 166-146 in the paint and lost two games by an average of 18.5 points. Once a vaunted defense, the Warriors have toiled to the bottom of the league in defensive rating this season.

"These things take time, and we have to put them out there and let them learn on the floor," Kerr said. "We'll learn about them as well, we'll get some games on film that we can really examine it and see what the best combinations are going forward."

Even Golden State's small victories come with a caveat. In Monday's 134-123 win over the Pelicans, Evans limped out of Smoothie King Center. After struggling to find minutes last season, Evans had finally shown promise.

"A young player who was finally getting some time," Kerr said. "Finally getting some minutes to show what he could do, so I feel bad for Jacob."

As Evans reconciled his latest injury, Looney was disappointed with his latest diagnosis. Though he has participated in pregame drills, Looney is out indefinitely as neurologic specialists try to find the remedy to his hamstring troubles.

"He's frustrated," Kerr said. "We're frustrated for him."

Throughout Golden State's dynastic run, Kerr warned the Warriors could be back in the "real" NBA soon. Now, with the latest injury bug, his words are coming true.

Joel Embiid and Karl-Anthony Towns both ejected for fighting - espn.com

The 76ers' Joel Embiid and Timberwolves' Karl-Anthony Towns were ejected for fighting in the third quarter of Wednesday night's game in Philadelphia.

The two big men, who have a history of talking trash to each other, shoved each other at the Wolves' end of the court while the Sixers pushed the ball upcourt, with Towns throwing a punch that missed and then putting Embiid in a headlock.

At one point during their tussle, Embiid was seen forcing his thumb into Towns' right eye as 76ers coach Brett Brown and players moved in to break things up. The players were still on their feet grappling before being separated.

Embiid and Towns were tossed after a video review.

"We deemed the altercation a fight. Therefore, by rule, they're both ejected,'' Mark Ayotte, the officials' crew chief, told a pool reporter after the game. "I just saw them each lock arms. And that escalated to the fight."

Brown said after the game that he's not concerned that Embiid will receive a suspension, saying he didn't see any punches thrown and that Embiid did not instigate the fight.

Afterward, Embiid made light of the situation in a post on his Twitter account, writing in part, "Great team win!!! I was raised around lions and a cat pulled on me tonight."

Embiid said no incident with Towns earlier in the game was a factor in their altercation, and that "it kind of happened out of nowhere."

"I felt like you could see a lot of things the previous three possessions in the post." he said. "I kind of got it the way I wanted to, and then -- I don't know, I guess that last possession, we got them to turn the ball over, and my hand was staying tangled up. And next thing I know, he's holding me; we're holding each other.

"But it's basketball. That's what I'm good at -- I like to get in people's minds."

Towns didn't get into specifics, instead saying, "It was a competitive game" in response to multiple questions about the fight.

"As you can see tonight, [Town's] got a lot of fight in him," Wolves guard Jeff Teague told reporters. "Last year, I wouldn't say he wouldn't do that or he would've took it, but he's here to make a statement. I think tonight it just showed a lot of heart. I'm riding with him."

At the bottom of the scrum, Embiid's teammate Ben Simmons had his forearm around Towns' throat as he forcefully held his opponent down. Ayotte said his crew deemed Simmons a "peacemaker" who was trying to break up the fight.

"Just making sure my teammate was good," Simmons said. "I always got my teammate's back."

Embiid shadowboxed to the crowd's delight on his way back to the locker room, and fans responded with "MVP!" chants. He said he didn't expect to be suspended for his part in the incident.

"All I did was try to be as cool as I could in that situation. Personally, I didn't throw any punches, so I shouldn't get suspended," he said. "But they have a history of just overruling anything that comes to me in a subtle way -- so hopefully they'll overrule it in the right way, but I don't expect it."

Philadelphia beat Minnesota 117-95 for its fourth consecutive victory to begin the season. The Sixers were leading by 20 when Embiid and Towns went at it.

Embiid played only 20 minutes and still led Philadelphia in scoring with 19 points. Towns scored 13 in 23 minutes for Minnesota (3-1).
