Mike McCarthy's rebirth after messy Aaron Rodgers-Packers divorce - New York Post

New decade, new team for Mike McCarthy.

Hours after the Cowboys officially parted ways with Jason Garrett following nine-plus seasons, news emerged Monday the team would hire McCarthy as the next head coach. The former Packers coach met with Cowboys brass on Saturday, and according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, stayed at owner Jerry Jones’ home that night.

“Once you stay at Jerry’s house, he doesn’t lose his guy,” a source told Schefter.

One of the most coveted candidates in this year’s coaching carousel, McCarthy’s 13-year tenure in Green Bay came to an abrupt end before the conclusion of the 2018 season, amid rumors of tension with quarterback Aaron Rodgers. Coaching in 2020 has long been on his mind.

“To do it right and to be in position to win it every year, that’s what I’m looking for,” McCarthy said in December, according to NFL.com. “So that’s the opportunity, that’s who I want to be paired with. And I’m not trying to just go win one, I’m trying to win them all. And I’ve always taken that approach. That’s always been my outlook.

“And every decision that’s ever been made towards the football team, it was A, number one, what’s best for the locker room? And it’s about moving that locker room forward, ’cause nothing ever stays the same. You’re either getting better or you’re going the other way. And that’s in life and in football.”

After defeating the Steelers in the Super Bowl back in February 2011 — McCarthy and Rodgers’ lone title together — it appears the Packers started to go “the other way,” especially in McCarthy’s last year at the helm as reports surfaced about Rodgers’ frustration over the direction of the offense. The quarterback is also said to have “had a chip on his shoulder with Mike” since McCarthy took the reins in 2006.

“There was a lot more going on within our organization that I didn’t experience the first 10 years,” McCarthy said. “And I think that’s a product of being successful. It’s part of that challenge. Failure comes more in that arena than any other. (But) we’re all fighters. You don’t make it in this business if you don’t have that part of your DNA.”

Following his dismissal from Green Bay, McCarthy said he endured some “bitter moments” early in his transition.

“I think that’s natural. And I think anybody goes through it, that those are natural feelings,” he said. “At the end of the day, I’m thinking more about beginnings. And I’ve had time to think about the whole 13 years and there’s been a tremendous amount of positive reflection with that.”

McCarthy’s new beginning will include a Dak Prescott-Ezekiel Elliott infused offense.
