Kobe Bryant wasn’t the only NBA star Ara Zobayan piloted around Los Angeles.
Zoboyan also was the pilot for Los Angeles Clippers star Kawhi Leonard — who had a close relationship with the 41-year-old Bryant — according to a Yahoo report on Tuesday.
The Sikorsy S-76b helicopter Bryant and his 13-year-old daughter Gianna were flying in on Sunday dropped more than 2,000 feet per minute before crashing into mountains northwest of Los Angeles, killing all nine people on board. They were headed to a basketball game at Bryant’s facility in Thousand Oaks.
A grieving friend of the 50-year-old pilot said Zobayan was “great” at flying and “always remained cool, calm and collected” in the air.
“Ara was an incredible pilot, instructor pilot, charter pilot and truly a great man,” Jared Joachim wrote Monday on Facebook. “He was not your typical egotistical helicopter pilot like most of us honestly are.”
Bryant preferred to get around via helicopter so that he could spend less time in traffic and more time with family — but he and his wife, Vanessa, promised never to fly together, according to People magazine.
The Lakers, whom Bryant led to five titles over two decades, postponed their Tuesday game against the Clippers in honor Bryant.
It will be made up at a later date. The Lakers are set to play next on Friday at Staples Center against the Portland Trail Blazers.
