Antonio Brown calls out New Orleans Saints, Sean Payton, NFL for 'publicity stunt' workout - USA TODAY

Free agent wide receiver Antonio Brown, again, spouted off on social media. And this time, he targeted a potential future employer.

One week after the New Orleans Saints brought Brown in for a workout, Brown posted a video during a live Instagram in which he called the workout a “publicity stunt” and called out Saints coach Sean Payton and the NFL, too.

“I know I got a really crusty tone lately,” Brown said in the video posted last Monday night. “But really I’m at peace. I just don’t like the lack of respect in the world. You know, everyone has deadlines. I guess the NFL don’t have a deadline for me, so. I appreciate Sean Payton and them guys for supporting me and bringing me out to work out. But I think it was a publicity stunt for them.

“Sean Payton know the feeling of being left behind, not being able to interact with his team. I don’t have a team. But it is what it is. We don’t seek comfort. We don’t make excuses. I’mma just keep committing to be the difference. ‘Cause I know I’m the difference.”

During the video, Brown appears to be on a treadmill and is speaking directly into the camera.

Brown’s comments are curious, considering multiple reports that he brought a camera crew to the Saints workout, despite the team asking him not to do so.

Brown, 31, has had a tumultuous year. After forcing his way out of Pittsburgh, the Steelers traded him to the Oakland Raiders, where he signed a three-year $50 million contract. Then, after skipping multiple practices and meetings during training camp, in part as he recovered from burns to his feet after an accident during a cryotherapy session, general manager Mike Mayock issued several statements saying the team needed Brown to be “all in.”

Brown also launched a battle against the NFL, seeking to wear a helmet that had been declared obsolete by both the league and the NFL Players Association, through the National Operating Committee for Standards of Athletic Equipment.

The Raiders then cut Brown. The Patriots signed him in September and he appeared in one game in Week 4, catching four passes for 56 yards and one touchdown.

A Sports Illustrated investigation revealed incidents of an alleged sexual assault and harassment against victims. One day after Brown allegedly sent threatening messages to one of the women, the Patriots cut him.

The NFL announced that it would investigate Brown under the personal conduct policy, an inquiry that remains ongoing.

Brown’s “Payton know the feeling of being left behind” is a likely reference to Payton’s suspension for the entire 2012 season for his role in the Bountygate scandal.

Giants GM Dave Gettleman defends controversial Leonard Williams trade with another expression - CBS Sports

The New York Giants fired Pat Shurmur after compiling just a 9-23 record over the last two seasons, but general manager Dave Gettleman, the brain trust behind the Shurmur hire and the failed attempts to make the Giants roster better over that same time span, was given a second chance to rectify his mistakes after being retained for 2020.

One of Gettleman's most controversial decisions was the Leonard Williams trade he made at the deadline this past October, as the Giants parted ways with a 2020 third-round pick (No. 68 overall) and a fourth or fifth-round pick in 2021 for eight games in a season many believe was already lost based on New York's record (2-6) at the time of the deal. Williams finished with 26 tackles, a forced fumble, 11 quarterback hits, and a 0.5 sack with the Giants -- not exactly what they were hoping for.

"I had heard rumors that [Williams] was available, so I called to ask," Gettleman said as he defended the Williams trade Tuesday, via Ryan Dunleavy of the New York Post. "I thought we got fair trade value. When you are in the trade business, you want to get to a win-win. Most people are savvy enough where it's going to have to be fair."

"Bottom line is we felt the juice is worth the squeeze."

Another decision meant another chance for Gettleman to defend it with a fruitless expression. The reality is simple -- the Giants could have waited until free agency to squeeze the juice while keeping the draft picks, especially since they will have slightly over $67 million in available cap space come March. Gettleman's philosophy -- bringing in Williams would sure up the Giants' run defense -- but that didn't exactly happen. The Giants were fourth in yards per carry allowed (3.4), but were 20th in rush yards allowed (113.2) and still allowed 28.2 points (third-most in the NFL).

Despite the lack of production on paper, Gettleman seems determined to keep him around. If the Giants sign Williams, that 2021 fifth-round pick becomes a fourth and they will surely be paying him a salary above the $14.2 million per season he's making this year. Signing Williams to a massive deal could hinder the Giants' ability to improve in other areas in free agency, a price they didn't have to pay in the first place if Gettleman didn't decide to justify a trade.

"Now we know what we have, and we were willing to do that," Gettleman said. "We felt we needed him."

The Giants will be implementing a new scheme with James Bettcher out as defensive coordinator, so no matter where Williams goes he will be learning a new defense. That could shy him away from the Giants unless they pay top dollar for Williams.

New York would get a mid-round compensatory pick if Williams walks, but that's not of equal value to what the Giants gave up. A real head-scratcher.

"At the end of the day, we felt good about him," Gettleman said. "He did what we wanted him to do. He wants to be here."

Bears committed to Mitchell Trubisky as 2020 starter - ChicagoBears.com

After winning the NFC North with a 12-4 record last season, the Bears entered 2019 with Super Bowl aspirations. But they failed to make the playoffs, finishing in third place in their division with an 8-8 mark.

A major reason for the lack of success was an offense that regressed across the board, ranking 29th in the NFL in both scoring (17.5 points per game) and total yards (296.8). It was a precipitous decline from 2018, when the Bears were 10th in scoring (25.6 points).

Trubisky had a roller-coaster season. He helped the Bears win four of five games from Nov. 10-Dec. 5 by producing 13 touchdowns (11 passing and two rushing). In back-to-back victories over the Lions and Cowboys, he threw three TD passes in both contests while posting passer ratings of 118.1 and 115.5. But in the last three games, Trubisky threw just one TD pass and recorded ratings of 64.5, 65.4 and 84.0.

“We need more time in the coming months to evaluate everything, but the first thing that comes to mind for me is just consistency,” Pace said. “You see moments, you see games, but for him [the issue is] stringing together better consistency. So you have peaks and valleys; we just need to flatten that out.”

Those peaks and valleys were not unexpected for Pace, who believes that young quarterbacks develop at different rates.

“It’s never going to be a straight line, it’s never going to be linear,” Pace said. “There's going to be ups and downs. And you see moments this year, you see games, you see him responding to adverse situations within a game. Those are signs of positive improvement. We just need to smooth out those inconsistencies.”

Sitting next to Pace at Tuesday’s press conference, coach Matt Nagy said that Trubisky’s No. 1 offseason priority will be to become “a master at understanding coverages.”

“These defensive coordinators, they have different ways of showing different coverages, and they’re good at it,” Nagy said. “Our first year here [in 2018], I thought Mitch did a really good job at understanding the importance of getting in and out of the huddle with the verbiage that we have. We’ve also learned, not just with him but with our players, how to use that.

“The next step, we talked about it this past year, going into it, was level 202? Now, how do you see the defense? Let’s now put that all together and understand now how defenses are going to try to trick you, and let’s not get tricked. If we do that, we slow the game down and we collectively get other parts of this offense fixed, which I know we can and that’s our job. That’s the exciting part, is that looking for solutions, staying positive, believing in people and getting this thing done.”

Nagy feels that Trubisky is close to becoming a master at understanding coverages.

“He’s not far, but we need to do is we need to really hammer through in this offseason here,” Nagy said, “understanding the amount of different coverages and different looks that you get from these different coordinators that are out there. That’s not hard, that's just a matter of continuing with that commitment of doing it and then learning how to do it is great. I think that he’s right there; it’s just a matter of doing it and then taking that, too, and transferring it to the field with practice and games.”

Although the Bears remain committed to Trubisky as their starting quarterback, Pace indicated that it’s too early to say whether the team will pick up his fifth-year option for the 2021 season. “We’re not at that point right now with the season ending just two days ago,” Pace said.

Pace also indicated that Trubisky might undergo surgery on his left (non-throwing) shoulder after injuring it in a Week 4 win over the Vikings. “Just doing the exit physicals yesterday,” Pace said, “just kind of going through it, there’s a potential he could.”

While Trubisky is entrenched atop the depth chart, the Bears will have to address the reserve positions given that backup Chase Daniel and third-stringer Tyler Bray are both due to become free agents.

“The quarterback room is critical,” Pace said. “It’s important for us. We’re always going to try to make it better. But as far as who it is, what we’re going to do, we’re not there yet.”

King of the publicity stunt Antonio Brown says Saints worked him out as publicity stunt - Yahoo Sports

Just under the wire, Antonio Brown has thrown his hat into the ring for consideration in the category of “most absurd sports statement of the year.”

In an Instagram Live video posted Monday night while he was doing some cardio, Brown said the New Orleans Saints used his workout with the team last week as a publicity stunt.

Let’s mull this over: Antonio Brown, who posted a video saying goodbye to the Pittsburgh Steelers organization and its fans last year weeks before he was traded to the Oakland Raiders, who posted a video a few months later asking the Raiders to release him before he’d even played a game for the team, who posted a video screaming, “I’m free!” after the Raiders cut him, who has gone on Twitter rants attacking any and everyone, apologizing, and then ranting again days later, said the Saints pulled a publicity stunt.

The reigning king of publicity stunts had the audacity to say an NFL team worked him out as a stunt.

As if the Saints didn’t have other things to worry about.

“I know I got a really crusty tone lately,” Brown said in the video.

“Sean Payton know[s] the feeling of being left behind, not being able to interact with his team [during his suspension from bounty-gate]. I don’t have a team. But it is what it is. We don’t seek comfort. We don’t make excuses. I’m [going to] just keep committing to be the difference. ‘Cause I know I’m the difference.”

Sunday morning, both Jay Glazer of Fox Sports and Mike Garafolo of NFL Network reported on their respective pre-game shows that the Saints told Brown not to show up to his workout with an entourage and Brown ignored them, arriving with a video crew and others in tow.

Oddly, video of both of those posts were removed from social media feeds not long after they went up.

Point of it all: Brown remains his biggest impediment to ever playing in the NFL again.

New year, same coach: Why Jerry Jones is taking his time to make a final decision about Jason Garrett - The Dallas Morning News

FRISCO -- The new decade will start like the previous one, with a coach the people want replaced.

After two days of meetings, Jason Garrett remains the coach of your Dallas Cowboys.

Happy New Year.

Back in 2010, Wade Phillips was running things until a 1-7 start forced Jerry Jones to move on and give Garrett a chance.

Nine years later, Garrett is still in place, at least for now, with the expectation more meetings with ownership will occur before his future is decided.

The biggest question as to why Garrett is the coach is pretty simple: Loyalty.

Jerry Jones invested not only money but time into Garrett. He hired this man before selecting Phillips as the head coach in 2007. Jones knows Garrett’s father, Jim, he approved the hire of Jason’s brother, Judd, for the scouting department and another brother, John, as a tight ends coach.

“I feel very rewarded by the almost 20 years I’ve had to work with him,” Jerry Jones said Sunday. Later Jones added, “It’s been a source of pride for me. It’s an honor to have worked with him and to be working with him.”

The more Jones talks, the case for Garrett getting his second contract extension with the club, gets stronger.

Jones disputes this by saying he just wants to be thorough. He could have told Garrett to pack up his office following Sunday’s victory over Washington. Instead, Garrett along with family and friends, did their customary photo session on the football field of AT&T Stadium. It felt like this would be the final time Garrett would spend on this field as a member of the Cowboys organization.

Monday came and Garrett held his final team meeting with Jones present. Several players said it was an emotional event not only because the season was over but the possibility of Garrett leaving for good was clear. Garrett also conducted some exit interviews like he would any other season. He then spoke with Jerry and Stephen Jones about a variety of topics and then everybody went home.

Tuesday morning, Garrett arrived at The Star and spoke to Jerry and Stephen Jones again, sources said.

By midday, some assistant coaches were headed home with their work done and Garrett still in place as the head coach.

One assistant coach said he didn’t know what was going on.

It seemed a perplexing Tuesday afternoon was normal for the Cowboys.

Outsiders love to say the Cowboys are a dysfunctional organization. Have you checked out what Cleveland has done? Washington? Maybe the New York Jets?

The Cowboys are a well-oiled machine compared to them. But one thing the Cowboys, especially the Jones family, have become is loyal. They will give people second and third chances to prove themselves. Jerry Jones maybe to a fault is too loyal.

On Monday and Tuesday Jones displayed loyalty and compassion to a man he knows must go.

“Jason Garrett has been a long-term, very important, pleasant part of my life, certainly in sport and in football,” Jerry Jones said. “By and through him being a player here, by and through what he’s been as a coach, what he’s been as a working associate. He’s just got a great place for me and that’s if he’s coaching 10 more years for the Cowboys or if he’s not. He’s done that. We’ve had that kind of life together and it’s great.”

Jerry Jones adores Garrett. It’s something that should be taken into account when this whole thing ends. Jones was not going to dump Garrett Sunday night after beating Washington. He was going to give Garrett a chance to speak to a group of players who became men under him. Jones wasn’t going to do it Monday or Tuesday after meeting with him privately.

Jones wanted to make sure he gave Garrett every chance to make his case to stay. Jones believes Garrett will get another job somewhere, New York Football Giants anyone? Before he departs, the Cowboys organization will do right by a guy they groomed to become the head coach.

So as we start a new year and a new decade, the wait continues for Jones to finally tap Garrett on the shoulder and tell him to move on.

If you’re looking for a New Year’s resolution, maybe patience should be on the list because that’s what the Cowboys have been doing for about nine years with Garrett.

And now that patience is about to run out.

Achilles surgery won't deter Giants' interest in keeping Jon Halapio - New York Post

One of the cruelest twists of the Giants season happened with less than five minutes left in the final game.

On an otherwise meaningless snap, Halapio — a 2014 draft pick of the Patriots who didn’t make his NFL debut until 2017 — did not get off the turf. He was carted off the field and left the postgame locker room on crutches.

But it’s not a worst-case scenario for Halapio, who underwent successful surgery without complications to repair a torn Achilles tendon Tuesday at the Hospital for Special Surgery, according to agent Doug Eldridge.

“This is a frustrating way to close out the season, but I believe that opposition leads to opportunity,” Halapio said in a statement thanking the Giants and their fans for support. “I’ll do the hard work necessary to return to the field, the game, the locker room I love so much.”

Halapio, 28, won the starting job each of the last two preseasons but started just two games before a season-ending leg injury in 2018. He is a restricted free agent this offseason, but it sounds as if the injury will not deter the Giants’ interest.

“Now he is not going to be ready until [summer] camp most likely,” general manager Dave Gettleman said.

The Giants will be looking to add at least one new starter (right tackle) on the offensive line.

The Giants fired coach Pat Shurmur but assistant coaches and coordinators remain under contract, free to use their offices but also pursue opportunities with other organizations without the Giants blocking an interview.

Gettleman said they will send assistants to the Senior Bowl as a courtesy because that is the NFL’s “job fair” and he will encourage the new coach to interview holdovers. He expects some of the Giants’ “young coaches” to be part of the staff for the East-West Shrine Game of college stars.

Gettleman maintained the Giants locker room was strong, citing Janoris Jenkins as a rogue example. The veteran cornerback now with the Saints criticized his Giants teammates and the coaching staff at separate points, but the final straw that led to his release was calling a fan a “retard” on social media and botching his forced apology.

“I saw a team that came out, practiced hard every day, and played hard on Sundays,” Gettleman said. “In terms of a culture problem downstairs … first time it’s ever been mentioned to me, and I’m through that locker room all the time on a daily basis. What Janoris said, he said. He’s it. He was it.”

Washington Redskins: 5 biggest takeaways from the 2019 NFL season - ClutchPoints

The Washington Redskins went 3-13 in 2019. They fired head coach Jay Gruden after an 0-5 start, and interim head coach Bill Callahan was relieved of his duties immediately after the season.

In fact, they already have a replacement in Ron Rivera (a fantastic hiring if you ask me).

However, that’s not what we are here to talk about. We’re here to talk about the biggest takeaways from that 2019 season.

Sure, 3-13 is not good, but there were plenty of positives (and negatives) along the way. Plenty to look back at and use to look forward.

A Lot of Pieces Are Already In Place

The Redskins are 3-13 and haven’t been to the playoffs in a few years now. They really aren’t that far off though.

2019 saw the rise of rookie Terry McLaurin at receiver. Kelvin Harmon and Steven Sims Jr. had great rookie campaigns as well.

Meanwhile, Derrius Guice looked awesome when healthy at running back and Dwayne Haskins looks like he’s growing into the answer at quarterback.

That only really leaves two issues on offense. Clearly, there’s a need for a tight end. Then the offensive line needs some work, but Ereck Flowers was fantastic at left guard, so that might be a long-term solution.

Defensively, Quinton Dunbar was a stud at cornerback in 2019 and the defensive line is superb. They could use some linebackers but Cole Holcomb is solid and Montez Sweat shows a ridiculous amount of potential as a pass rusher.

With a little help in the secondary and Chase Young, this defense could be elite.

Changes Needed To Happen

This is the most obvious one on the list. Fans have known it for years, but it’s finally happened, big changes were needed in the Washington organization.

The Redskins cut ties with Jay Gruden in the middle of the year, and eventually fired Bruce Allen.

With Allen gone, they need to find a new GM. The Redskins had won very little under Allen and with a 3-13 record in 2019, things weren’t exactly looking up.

Apparently, this has opened up the door for a Trent Williams reunion as well.

They Need Depth

I know I said they aren’t that far off, and a lot of the starters do look good. However, Washington is in desperate need of depth.

The Redskins had a ton of injuries in 2019 (what’s new), and were ill equipped for them. When Williams refused to play, they had to get Donald Penn out of retirement. Injuries put them in awkward spots at tight end and receiver too. The cornerbacks were down to the last straw, and any injuries at linebacker would create serious issues.

If Washington wants to compete in the near future, they need to add a lot of depth.

Tress Way is a Superstar

Seriously, Tress Way is a superstar. Yes, he’s a punter and this seems like a weird takeaway, but the Redskins need to hold on to him for as long as they can. They’ve already done that by signing him to a nice long-term deal.

Way can change the game for the Redskins. He helped limit the damage this season by flipping field position countless times.

If Washington can start competing more, his value might not be highlighted as much because he won’t be punting it seven times a game. However, his value will actual skyrocket.

Give Me More Tim Settle

Okay, we’ve already talked about pieces being in place and we’ve already talked about depth. This technically gets into both of those.

McLaurin is a star, Sweat is a star, Dunbar is a star, Da’Ron Payne, Jonathan Allen and Matthew Ioannidis are stars. Not a lot of depth going on thought right? That’s why I said they need to work on it.

Well, the defensive line is the exception. Allen is the leader, and Payne is the young stud. Meanwhile, Ioannidis is extremely underrated, and honestly might be the best of the bunch. However, there’s a fourth member, Tim Settle.

Settle was drafted in 2018, like Payne. He was seen as the late-round project. He plays sparingly, but tends to make pretty big plays when given the chance.

Settle had 14 tackles (two for loss) and two sacks in 2019. That’s despite not even playing in Week 17, and appearing in a small percentage of the team’s defensive snaps.

In fact, Settle played in less than 20% of the defensive snaps more times (four) than he played in one 40% (three times).

When he worked with four defensive linemen, the Redskins looked much more competent defensively.

WATCH: Kentucky QB Lynn Bowden seals Belk Bowl win over Virginia Tech with last-minute TD - CBS Sports

Just like he had so many times in 2019, Kentucky quarterback Lynn Bowden served as the primary offensive weapon for a nail-biting go-ahead scoring drive in the final minute of a 37-30 win against Virginia Tech in the Belk Bowl on Tuesday.

Trailing 30-24 midway through the fourth quarter, Bowden led a methodical 18-play, 85-yard drive that took all but 15 seconds off the clock and finished with a 13-yard touchdown pass to Josh Ali. The drive included fourth down conversions and plenty of hard running from Bowden, who displayed impressive composure with the game on the line.

It was Bowden's only passing touchdown of a performance that once again highlighted his ability as a dual-threat playmaker, as the former wide receiver rolled up 233 rushing yards and two rushing touchdowns on 34 attempts.

Reports heading into the game pointed to heated tensions between the Kentucky and Virginia Tech players. They reportedly had been exchanging some smack talk during the joint team activities this week, and during warm-ups the ESPN cameras caught some taunting, pushing and shoving between the two teams.

Virginia Tech never trailed until that go-ahead score, and then the Hokies' efforts to pull off a Hail Mary and a multiple-lateral situation with time expired resulted in a scoop-and-score for the Wildcats to extend the lead. But while the Hokies never trailed, they continually allowed Bowden to keep Kentucky in the game with explosive plays.

For Mark Stoops, this win serves as a fitting end to a year that was expected to be a step back from last season's 10-win showing. After losing multiple NFL Draft picks and seeing major injuries at the quarterback position contribute to a 2-3 start, Stoops and the Kentucky offensive staff revamped the offense with Bowden, a wide receiver and kick returner, as the quarterback. What resulted was some of the most prolific rushing performances in school history as Kentucky rolled off three straight wins to close the regular season, gaining at least 400 rushing yards in each performance.

NFL teams slash staff on 'Black Monday.' Here's who's out - CNBC

Head coach Freddie Kitchens of the Cleveland Browns looks on from the sidelines during the first half of the NFL football game against the Arizona Cardinals at State Farm Stadium on December 15, 2019 in Glendale, Arizona.

With the close of the NFL's regular season comes "Black Monday," the annual purge of coaches and executives whose teams didn't make the playoffs.

The Cleveland Browns, New York Giants, Washington Redskins and Carolina Panthers have all fired their head coaches as of Monday afternoon.

Browns fire head coach Freddie Kitchens

The Browns announced Sunday that head coach Freddie Kitchens has been "relieved of his duties" as head coach. Kitchens joined the Browns as a running backs and associate head coach in 2018 and was promoted to offensive coordinator later that year, according to the team's release. He stepped into the head coaching role in January of 2019.

"We thank Freddie for his hard work and commitment to this organization but did not see the success or opportunities for improvement to move forward with him as our head coach," Browns owners Dee and Jimmy Haslam said in the release. "Our focus is on hiring an exceptional leader for this football team and we will take a comprehensive approach to this process."

The Haslams said they are "excited about the core players" and hope to hire a head coach that "will put this group of players in the best position to succeed."

Giants let go of head coach Pat Shurmur

Giants head coach Pat Shurmur is also out of the job after two seasons, the team announced Monday morning.

The team finished with a 4-12 record this season and has not won more than five games in the last three seasons, according to the release.

"The last three seasons have been extremely disappointing for the organization and our fans," Giants president John Mara said. "Pat has been a successful and highly-respected NFL coach for 21 years and he is not solely responsible for our record. But we came to the conclusion it is best to have a fresh start with the coaching staff."

Redskins team president Bruce Allen has also been fired, owner Dan Snyder announced Monday, after the Redskins let go of head coach Jay Gruden earlier this season. Snyder pulled the plug on Gruden in early October after an 0-5 start.

"Through the first five games of the 2019 season, the team has clearly not performed up to expectations, and we all share in that responsibility," the team said in an issued statement.

Many are expecting former Panthers head coach Ron Rivera, who was fired on Dec. 3, to fill the vacant Redskins head coaching position. ESPN reported that the Redskins are expected to hire Rivera, "barring unforeseen developments."

Longtime sportswriter Michael Silver tweeted that Rivera and his wife, Stephanie, were on a flight to Northern Virginia on Monday.

Source -- Cowboys' Jerry Jones meets with Jason Garrett again - ESPN

FRISCO, Texas -- Jason Garrett remains the Dallas Cowboys' coach -- at least for now.

Garrett met for a second time with owner/general manager Jerry Jones and his son, Stephen, Dallas' executive vice president, on Tuesday, sources told ESPN.

Garrett met with the two on Monday, but by the end of the business day it was passed on that there would be no news conference at The Star regarding the coach's future and the owner's plan for 2020.

With talks ongoing, Monday felt like any other wrap-up to a Cowboys season, with players stuffing giant gray trash bags with their belongings, saying goodbye to their teammates, meeting with their position coaches and undergoing exit physicals.

"It's tough. Tough to take," said veteran linebacker Sean Lee, who is among the more than 20 players set to become free agents in March. "We didn't accomplish the goals we wanted to, didn't play up to the standard that we wanted to. You know these teams change every year, and so saying bye to some guys and knowing that you may never [again] be teammates with some guys, it can be very tough."

Garrett's future, however, remains the Cowboys' most pressing issue.

His contract expires Jan. 14, but after Sunday's 47-16 season-ending win over Washington, Jerry Jones said he did not have a timetable for a decision and did not seem to care that other teams, particularly in his division, would have a chance to start the hiring process before the Cowboys if he opts to move on from Garrett.

Assistant coaches such as Baltimore's Greg Roman, Kansas City's Eric Bieniemy and San Francisco's Robert Saleh have received head-coaching interest from other teams, with the Ravens, Chiefs and 49ers playing in the wild-card round of the playoffs.

The Cowboys have not had a full-blown coaching search since 2007, after Bill Parcells retired. Jones interviewed a number of candidates back then, including Garrett, before settling on Wade Phillips.

Many Cowboys assistant coaches have expiring contracts as well and can begin seeking jobs. Passing game coordinator Kris Richard is set to become a coaching free agent of sorts, and ESPN's Josina Anderson reported that he would interview for the Giants' head-coaching vacancy Thursday. Defensive coordinator Rod Marinelli, special-teams coordinator Keith O'Quinn, tight ends coach Doug Nussmeier, running backs coach Gary Brown, safeties coach Greg Jackson and linebackers coach Ben Bloom are among the assistants without contracts for 2020.

Garrett is 85-67 as Cowboys coach but has won only two playoff games since 2011. While he has had only one losing season (4-12 in 2015), the 8-8 finish in 2019 was the fourth of his career. He entered the season knowing he had to win but could not get the Cowboys into the playoffs.

After the Washington game, Garrett said he wanted to be the Cowboys' coach but had "no idea" if he would be given that chance.

A day later, his players still did not know if Garrett would be around in 2020.

"In reflection, I'm very fortunate to have spent the time that I did with Coach Garrett," Pro Bowl center Travis Frederick said. "Whether he's here next year or somewhere else, the group of men that he's going to be in front of will be better men and better players because of it."

Lee was a rookie when Garrett took over for Phillips as an interim coach midway through the 2010 season.

"For me, it's a guy who's an unbelievable coach, unbelievable person, put his heart and soul into coaching, believed in his players with his entire heart, forced us to be better than we could be in a lot of situations," said Lee when asked what Garrett's legacy would be if he did not return. "Made me believe I could come back from a lot of injuries, from the knee, from the toe, from the neck. A guy who inspired me and really made me a better football player than I thought I could be.

"So from my standpoint, an unbelievable coach, an unbelievable guy and a guy that I love."

Cowboys Rumors: Jason Garrett's Future Unknown Despite Jerry Jones Meeting - Bleacher Report

ARLINGTON, TEXAS - DECEMBER 29: Head coach Jason Garrett of the Dallas Cowboys stands on the sideline during the game against the Washington Redskins at AT&T Stadium on December 29, 2019 in Arlington, Texas. (Photo by Richard Rodriguez/Getty Images)

The long wait for news on Dallas Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett's status will continue into 2020 after Jane Slater of NFL Network's latest report:

ESPN's Adam Schefter reported earlier Tuesday that Garrett was scheduled to meet with Cowboys executives at 1 p.m. ET.

"Resolution likely, but not definite," Schefter tweeted. "Expectation continues to be Garrett and Dallas will part ways, but the Cowboys are run as a family, Garrett has been a part of family, and it’s hard to part ways."

Garrett's Cowboys finished 8-8 after going 10-6 and winning the NFC East the year before. He has coached the team since the midway point of the 2010 season.

Garrett has posted a respectable 85-67 record, but the Cowboys have won only two playoff games under his watch. They have not advanced to the NFC Championship Game since 1995.

Dallas has fielded a competitive team during Garrett's entire tenure aside from the 2015 season, when starting quarterback Tony Romo missed all but four games due to injury. That 4-12 team went 3-1 with Romo and 1-11 otherwise.

The Cowboys have finished 8-8 or better in eight of Garrett's nine full seasons.

On the flip side, Garrett's offensive tendencies have come into serious question over the years, with NFL analyst Warren Sharp providing his takes as the years have gone along:

In particular, conservative decisions made by himself or members of his staff have been the object of criticism.

One notable example this year included kicking a field goal against the Patriots on 4th-and-7 with his team down 13-6 with six minutes left, as Sharp referenced.

Another is a sequence at the end of Dallas' 28-24 loss to the Minnesota Vikings, when a potential game-winning drive fell short.

Todd Brock of Cowboys Wire explained:

"The Cowboys were positioned to pull off a dramatic comeback after being behind for most of the game, with the ball deep in enemy territory and down by four points with under two minutes to play. That’s when the passing game that had found success all night was inexplicably shelved for consecutive runs by Ezekiel Elliott that lost three yards and wasted almost 50 seconds of precious time. The sequence put the Cowboys in a fourth-down situation where a pass was expected by everyone, including Vikings linebacker Eric Kendricks, who tipped the throw away and ended the Dallas drive 14 yards away from the end zone."

For now, Garrett's status remains in limbo, but David Moore of the Dallas Morning News provided clarity on next steps:

It is still expected the Cowboys will eventually part with Garrett, however.

Slater reported Monday that Garrett told coaches with expiring contracts that they could "look for work elsewhere" and that his status would be "sorted out in the 24-48 hours."

49ers QBs honor Beathard family after win over Seahawks - NBCSports.com

The controversy continues.

On the penultimate offensive play for the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday night against the 49ers, Russell Wilson and Co. were faced with a third-and-goal from the 5-yard line with 15 seconds to play.

Wilson tried to find his tight end, Jacob Hollister, on a quick turnaround route but Hollister was unable to make the catch, as he was tangled up with 49ers linebacker Fred Warner.

NBC Sports rules analyst Terry McAulay was in the broadcast booth with the “Sunday Night Football” crew and noted that at the very least, the officials should have paused the game in order to review the call on the field.

"He's clearly got him grabbed, significantly hindering the receiver. This should be a booth review. I'm surprised they have not stopped the game," McAulay mentioned on the broadcast.

Coaches are not able to challenge plays in the final two minutes, as all replay reviews must be initiated by the officials.

NFL senior VP of officiating Al Riveron said after the game that the booth officials reviewed the play in real-time, but didn't feel the contact warranted further discussion. Seahawks coach Pete Carroll wasn't happy about the call Monday morning and said he hopes the league takes a look at the sequence.

NFL.com’s Gregg Rosenthal explains why he considers the end of arguably the most exciting game of the NFL regular season a “failure” by the league:

“If the NFL is going to take the challenge flag out of the coaches' hands in the final two minutes of the game, it needs to make sure it takes the appropriate time to review such a game-altering play.

"If someone as experienced as McAulay saw the defender "significantly hindering" the play, it deserves a longer look -- at the very least. While Hollister initiated the contact, Warner is literally holding Hollister's arms down when the ball flies by.

"Taking more time to review the play and then letting it stand would have been curious, but a lot more understandable. There should have been more angles to see and Riveron could have broken the play down in slow motion.

"If the league office wanted to still stick with the call on the field, it would have looked like a questionable bit of execution by the replay officials rather than the failure in process we got. If this play wasn't worth examining outside the 20-second frenzy of a running play clock, it makes me wonder why exactly the rule was ever put in place."

The New Orleans Saints faced a similar situation after last season’s NFC Championship, in which a blatantly missed pass interference penalty resulted in the NFL allowing coaches to throw the challenge flag on plays with potential pass interference beginning this season.

Regardless of what the conversation might be, the Seahawks now must turn their attention to the Philadelphia Eagles for a wild-card weekend showdown, while the 49ers get a week off to prepare to host a divisional-round game on Jan. 11 at Levi's Stadium.

Adam Gase's puzzling Le'Veon Bell comment isn't as it seems - New York Post

The relationship between Jets coach Adam Gase and running back Le’Veon Bell was back under the spotlight on Monday after Gase gave a terse response when asked about Bell’s future with the Jets.

It has been well documented Gase was not in favor of signing Bell last March because of his price tag. Gase felt the money could be better spent to fill other holes on the Jets. As Bell struggled this season, many pointed the finger at Gase for how he used him. There has been speculation the Jets would try to trade Bell this offseason even though he signed a four-year, $52.5 million contract in March.

Gase was asked Monday if he wants Bell back.

“He’s under contract for three more years,” Gase said. “You can ask [GM Joe Douglas] tomorrow. … I’m not in charge of personnel.”

On the surface, this looks damning. But there is context. Gase disdains the reporter who asked the question and seemed to be reacting more toward the questioner than the question. Gase has been very supportive of Bell all season. It would be strange for him to reverse course now.

Later in the press conference, Gase said he and Bell had a conversation about the future and were excited about improving.

“That was a conversation we had a couple of weeks ago,” Gase said. “We talked about looking at some of the stuff they did in Pittsburgh and talking through some of the things he’s comfortable with in the run game, especially early in the offseason of trying to focus on those type of runs and pass game. We both were like, we’ll be able to take a break and then when we come back we can really hone in on some of those things that maybe we missed or we did too much of that he wasn’t really comfortable with.”

While Gase sent mixed messages on Bell, he was clear when asked about safety Jamal Adams, who is expected to be seeking a new contract this offseason.

“You guys know where I stand with Jamal,” Gase said. “He has been one of the best players I have ever seen play in person. He’s done nothing but work extremely hard, fight through injury, be there for his teammates, make plays when we needed him to. He has been the heart and soul of our defense.”

WR Quincy Enunwa, who suffered a season-ending neck injury in Week 1, said he was told he has spinal stenosis, but remains hopeful he can play. Enunwa had neck surgery in 2017, but did not have surgery this time.

“Do I expect to play? I would love to play. It’s just about how well I heal up and then we’ll take it from there,” Enunwa said.

Enunwa said he and Gase have not spoken since he tweeted in November about his unhappiness with being fined for missing two rehab sessions. The two were scheduled to speak either later Monday or Tuesday as part of Enunwa’s exit interview.

Giants co-owners John Mara, Steve Tisch on decision to part ways with Pat Shurmur - Giants.com

“Steve and I decided to retain Dave and give him a chance to finish what he has started,” Mara said, “which includes so many changes in this organization that people really don’t know about. … We felt like we needed to give it a chance to see if it’s going to succeed or not. All that being said, we need to win more games, and Dave knows that, and that’s going to be the challenge going forward.”

Mara was asked why he fired Shurmur but retained Gettleman, who built the roster the coach didn’t win with.

“With Dave, I think we’ve had some hits and some misses (with personnel decisions),” he said. “He implemented so many changes within our organization, we just felt like at this stage to pull the plug on all of that would not be the wise thing to do. I’m excited about what I see in the future for this team because of the young players we have, because of the changes that we’re making. With Pat, it ends up being as much a gut instinct as anything else. I just felt like we weren’t winning enough games, we weren’t winning the games that we should have won, and we just need to go in a different direction.”

Neither of the team’s owners revealed any of the candidates for the coaching job. But each is confident they will find someone who will lead a renaissance for a franchise that has won just 12 games in three seasons.

“I think the search is going to be fruitful,” Tisch said, “and I think we’re going to find a terrific number of candidates and the right decision will be made.”

“We’re going to try to get the best candidates in here that we can, and we’re going to try to convince them why this is a good job opportunity for them,” Mara said. “We’ve got a terrific young quarterback, we’ve got a young roster, we’re in the best cap space shape we’ve been in in many years. There’s a lot to this organization that I think would attract a lot of different candidates.

“There well could be college candidates here. I’m really looking for leadership, that’s the big thing going forward. Somebody who can come in and take control of this roster, help build a culture that is going to lead to winning. Somebody who is going to help us with our football reorganization during the process we’re undergoing right now. We’re looking for all those qualities from the next candidate.”

Mara said he is “aware” of the perception that Gettleman’s presence could have a negative influence on potential coaches.

“I don’t have that concern, because I think once they meet him and get to know him that won’t be an issue,” Mara said. “…I’m going to want somebody that’s going to be able to work hand-in-hand with him. Dave and Pat’s relationship has been terrific, they worked very well together, there was no personnel decision that has been made here in the last two years that Pat wasn’t fully on board with.”

Mara was blunt in discussing the franchise’s recent record, both in the number of games lost and the inability to find a long-term solution as coach. Since two-time Super Bowl winner Tom Coughlin stepped down after the 2015 season, Ben McAdoo lasted 28 games and Shurmur 32. In his first season, McAdoo led the Giants to an 11-5 record and a wild card playoff berth, the team’s only postseason appearance since winning Super Bowl XLVI eight years ago. But he was fired after starting 2-10 the following year. Shurmur won five and then four games.

“We’ve failed twice in a row now, and you have to keep working at it, try to find the right guy,” Mara said. “I’m not convinced that either of the past two coaches couldn’t have been successful over a longer period of time, but there comes a point in time when your patience runs out, your gut tells you that you need to make a change, and that’s what happened this time.”

Mara and Tisch are well aware of the growing unrest among Giants fans as their recent decisions did not produce the desired results on the field.

“I say to the fans I totally understand your frustration, your concern, I read your emails, I get it,” Tisch said. “But, John and I make decisions that sometimes may not be popular, may not be supported by the fans, but we’re the ones making the decisions, we live by them. It’s been a very frustrating three years, certainly the record indicates that, those numbers don’t lie. Going forward, John and I want to make sure that those numbers change in the next season dramatically.”

For that to happen, they must hire the right coach.

New York Giants fire coach Pat Shurmur after two seasons - USA TODAY

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. – The New York Giants have fired Pat Shurmur after two seasons, and for the third time in four years, they are searching for a new head coach.

“This morning, we made the very difficult decision that it would be in the best interest of the franchise that we relieve Pat of his duties," Giants president and co-owner John Mara said in a statement. "The last three seasons have been extremely disappointing for the organization and our fans. Pat has been a successful and highly-respected NFL coach for 21 years and he is not solely responsible for our record. But we came to the conclusion it is best to have a fresh start with the coaching staff. We very much appreciate how much Pat has done for this franchise. He is a man of character and integrity and the team has conducted itself with pride and professionalism.

Mara also confirmed that general manager Dave Gettlman would remain for next season "hopefully for many years after that."

Shurmur was hired in January 2018 as the successor to Ben McAdoo, who was fired with four games remaining in the 2017 season. Steve Spagnuolo served as interim head coach for the final month before the Giants embarked on a coaching search that included perceived finalists Matt Patricia, Josh McDaniels and Shurmur, who ended up being the choice.

His two-year record with the Giants is 9-23, including a nine-game losing streak that matched the longest in the team's 94-year history (1976).

"This is a wins business. I get it. I get it," Shurmur said Sunday after the Giants' 34-17 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles.

"We've been talking about this for, I think, six weeks, right? You've been asking me the same questions for six weeks... But that's the reality of this business. When you don't win, that's the line of questioning. I get that."

Shurmur's best argument for returning would have been the development of Daniel Jones, who finished the season "light years" from where he was when he arrived as the No. 6 overall pick last April. Shurmur made the switch from Eli Manning to Jones heading into Week 3, believing that he and Jones would get time to grow together and turn this relationship into something special.

Had he known this would be his make-or-break season with three years left on his contract, perhaps Shurmur would have delayed Jones' insertion into the lineup, in turn strengthening his case to stay and be the one to develop Jones later in the year.

Shurmur was hired because he was an "adult," according to Gettleman, and the sentiment was echoed by co-owner and team president John Mara. He was brought in as McAdoo's successor to stabilize things off the field while being the right coach to pick Manning's successor at quarterback.

From that perspective, Shurmur did his job. The Giants are far more settled than they were two years ago off the field. Now, that does not make them winners – the scoreboard does – and for that, Shurmur needs to be held accountable with context.

His in-game rationale with planning and decision-making has been suspect, mostly due to the inconsistency with which he has operated. His record is what it is – let's not bring up his two years in Cleveland, because the Giants hired him despite that – and there remained a legitimate question as to whether Shurmur was the right coach for the post-McAdoo fallout, but not the one to move the Giants forward from this to another level.

Team brass has provided the answer, and now, less than two years after he was hired, Shurmur has unceremoniously been shown the door.
