Packers: 3 bold predictions for the Green Bay defense against Panthers - ClutchPoints

The Green Bay Packers are currently in the midst of a stellar 2019 campaign despite a loss to the Los Angeles Chargers. With the Packers  the Chargers, Green Bay is now gearing up for a NFC showdown against the Carolina Panthers set for Week 10.

Although the Green Bay offense has received most of the praise being heaped at the 7-2 Packers thus far into the 2019 regular season, the team’s defense hasn’t been too shabby either. With the Packers still in first place in the NFC North Division, one game ahead of the 6-3 Minnesota Vikings, the team’s defensive unit will need to come to play against the 5-3 Panthers in order for Green Bay to improve to 8-2 on the year come Sunday afternoon at Lambeu Field.

However, this is most certainly doable as the Packers will no doubt being focusing on Panthers running back Christian McCaffrey while pressuring quarterback Kyle Allen will also be a priority.

Preston Smith and Za’Darius Smith will combined for four sacks

As it stands today, the Green Bay Packers have recorded 22 total sacks as a result of the 2019 regular season with a whopping 16.5 of those tallies coming by way of veteran pass rushers Preston Smith and Za’Darius Smith, neither of whom were on the team’s roster last season. With the Packers making a point to sign not one but two elite pass rusher this past offseason, Green Bay was able to lure Preston Smith away from the Washington Redskins with Za’Darius Smith making his way to Wisconsin by way of the Baltimore Ravens. Za’Darius Smith leads the team with 8.5 sacks this season with his partner in crime in Preston Smith not too far away with eight sacks of his own.

With the Packers prioritizing the team’s pass rush all season long, Sunday afternoon’s matchup against the dangerous Carolina Panthers and quarterback Kyle Allen won’t be any different. Expect the “Smith Brothers” to take over if Green Bay is to come away with a huge win at home.

The Packers will record at least two interceptions against the Panthers

Entering the team’s Week 10 matchup against the Carolina Panthers, who just defeated the Tennessee Titans in Week 9, the Green Bay Packers rank sixth in the entire NFL with eight interceptions on the year. With the team focusing on improving its defensive secondary this past offseason, the Packers notably added rookie safety Darnell Savage as a result of the first round of the 2019 NFL Draft while also stealing veteran safety Adrian Amos away from the arch rival Chicago Bears. Savage and Amos have each tallied one interception while combing for seven pass defenses in 2019.

On the other hand, Panthers quarterback Kyle Allen came quite close to setting the NFL’s record for most completions without throwing an interception to start a career — then the last few weeks happened. After not throwing a pick as a result of his first handful of NFL starts, Allen has become quite turnover happy over the course of the last two weeks while Green Bay’s secondary could feast on the young signal caller if he chooses to once again be careless with the football.

Christian McCaffrey won’t exceed the 100-yard rushing mark

With the Carolina Panthers currently standing in the way of the surging franchise’s eighth win of the 2019 regular season, the Green Bay Packers will not have the most intricate game plan heading into its Week 10 matchup. It will be quite simple, actually — stop Panthers running back Christian McCaffrey at all costs!

Entering the NFC clash, the Packers will be sporting the 11th in scoring defense in the league while allowing 21 points per game in addition to serving as 26th in total defense en route to allowing an average of 382.9 yards per outing in 2019-20. Despire these less than stellar pedestrian numbers, the Packers have the firepower to keep Panthers quarterback Kyle Allen in check in addition to keeping McCaffrey under 100 yards rushing. It is also worth noting that the Packers sit at 24th in rush defense this time around while allowing an average of 127.7 yards on the ground, which may not look super impressive on paper.

Nonetheless, the Packers upgraded the team’s defense in a major way this offseason and this could  end up paying dividends in games like Sunday’s matchup against the Panthers. If the Packers top notch players come to play, shutting down a prolific rusher like McCaffrey should not be out of the cards.
