Jacob deGrom has secured his second straight NL Cy Young award.
The Mets ace beat out Hyun-Jin Ryu of the Dodgers and Max Scherzer of the Nationals to become just the 11th pitcher in MLB history to win consecutive Cy Young awards, it was revealed Wednesday.
DeGrom, who struggled at the beginning of the season before going 8-3 with a 1.89 ERA in his final 23 starts, is the second Met to win an award this offseason, following Pete Alonso, who on Monday won NL Rookie of the Year.
DeGrom, like last year and like Alonso this year, received 29 of 30 first-place votes (Ryu received the other).
DeGrom, 31, was 11-8 with a 2.43 ERA overall in what was a drop-off from his historic 2018 season, when he set an MLB record with 25 consecutive quality starts and finished with a 1.70 ERA.
Ryu finished 14-5 with a 2.32 ERA with 163 strikeouts in 182 ²/₃ innings and Scherzer went 11-7 with a 2.92 ERA and 243 K’s in 172 ¹/₃ innings.
Scherzer went on to win the World Series with the Nationals, but individual awards are voted on by members of the Baseball Writers’ Association of America before the postseason.
