The Jacksonville Jaguars lost in truly embarrassing fashion today to the Houston Texans. The final scoreline of 26-3 doesn’t convey just how wide a gap there was between these two franchises. The victors, led by All-Pro level Deshaun Watson who was literal plays out of thin air and completing passes as he fell to the ground. And the defeated, led by ineffective, uncreative coaches and a rookie quarterback in Gardner Minshew who played his worst possible game on the worst possible Sunday.
Cowardly play-calling. An escape artist for an opposing quarterback. Paper thin run defense. It all amounted to a terrible, no good, very bad loss for Jacksonville.
From the opening drive of the first quarter, you just had a feeling it was going to be one of those days. Watson put together a 13-play drive that saw 6:40 expire off the clock before the Jaguars offense set foot on the field.
And then it was a 14-play drive.
Then a 9-play drive.
In all, the Jaguars averaged just 5.6 plays per drive and turned the ball over on one out of every three of their drives.
And Minshew was responsible for all four of those turnovers — two interceptions and two fumbles. These weren’t tipped passes or receivers falling down, these were God awful throws and decisions that reminded me of He Who Must Not Be Named.
The defense wasn’t much better today, allowing the Texans to run for 216 yards. Carlos Hyde (remember him?) led the way with 160 yards on only 19 carries. The pass rush and secondary tried their best but Watson was just so damn good in the pocket today. Seven quarterback hits and a handful of pressures amounted to just one sack and Watson to finish with a 78.5% completion percentage.
With the loss, the Jaguars are two games behind the Texans for the lead in the AFC South and will almost certainly turn to Nick Foles after the bye week.
The dream is dead. Minshew Mania is no more. Eat Arby’s.
